Women Empowerment
Whitmer sophomore and A&E Editor Kalea Perkins reflects on what it means to her to be a woman.
We as women, as a whole, have been criticized by what type of body we have and scrutinized down to the tiniest detail in order to fit stereotypical standards in today’s world. Accepting our sense of worth, the influence of decisions that we can make ourselves, faith and hope are what keeps inspiring around us, to make changes and fight properly for equal rights and opportunities for every woman.
“I believe one of the things that makes me a strong woman is the support system, it helps through rough patches and to just build me.’’ Senior Sydeny Smith says.
Systems around the world are creating mindful and stable conditions for women to heal and breathe when tough times come around, when they need it. As time passes, we continue to gain voices around the world with those with louder voices speaking for the silent or silenced.
Instead of bringing each other down with irrational decisions, today’s women are trying to bring to light the problems and commotions in our world and try to make the world a better place.
In western countries female power is associated with women’s rights throughout history, in the beginning in the 19th and 20th century where suffrage and rights were a key feature. The second was the sexual revolution and the role of women in society, the third wave was feminism that was seen later in the 1990’s. Between 2018 and 2021, only 26 percent of countries have enough systems in place to track public markets for gender equality, 59 percent have some features of such a system, and 15 percent do not have the minimum elements of such a system.
There are varieties of movements or types of female empowerment and ways to help women around us and around the world. In a 2021 survey in 13 countries, 45 percent of women reported that they or a woman they know has experienced some form of violence since COVID-19.
While the short term impact of the COVID-19 shut downs and long term impact of the pandemic, new oppressions and problems have popped up. The global health crisis along with financial tensions increased violence against women. Laws and policies across America have turned back time and men are still provided more freedom in the making of their own choices, but the passion to create a real impact on gender equality through commitment, passion, and action has been the resounding response.
Putting women and girls at the center of economies will fundamentally drive better and more sustainable development outcomes for all, support a more rapid recovery, and place the world back on a footing to achieve the sustainable development goals to better achieve their future selves.
“’I empower myself by encouraging myself whether I feel like it or not to be productive or to be more confident in certain things.’’ Senior Piper Hunt says.
Being your own self in what you wear and being comfortable in your own skin around others and thinking about what makes you, you. This self-assurance leads to strong choices and the confidence to support others.
Staying true to yourself and empowering yourself is the only thing to worry about.
“Just to be me, and do whatever it takes no matter what happens. Even though I sometimes hate myself for the way I look, I have to accept who I am and love myself. Even if it’s hard to be a girl, you won’t regret it’’ Senior Jenna Klutzy says.
All these things are not easy for all young women, but in today’s world we have organizations built and founded by women that bring all women together to build bonds and sisterhood for long term goals.
“Girls feel more at ease because of having a group of friends who accept them for who they are, who listen to their problems, provide unconditional love, give each other honest opinions and great self-awareness.’’ Senior Jasmine Kutzly says.
Throughout time women have gained rights and freedom of our own selves as people and have fought for the end to inequality and justice of all well-being.
